While Donald Trump has contributed to many, MANY negative issues in society the past few weeks. He has done one positive thing; he has united America… against him.
Trump’s many controversial tweets, speeches, cabinet picks and executive orders have angered a large, diverse group of people for many reasons, including but not limited to blatant racism, sexism, complete disregard for science or environmental issues, promoting xenophobia, and exhibiting extreme homophobia. However, this unlikely group of angry people who once had nothing in common, now share one thing; a genuine hatred and disgust for Donald Trump and his actions. Trump has allowed the true meaning of democracy to shine through, due to his terrible actions. Some examples include:
- The checks and balances provided by the Federal appeals court and the Justice Department which has ruled multiple times against his ordered travel ban, which targets Muslims and refugees trying to enter the country. There have been nonstop protests in airports nationwide with crowds of people cheering as Muslim-American citizens are released to go to their homes. Not to mention the many lawyers coming during free time to offer legal advice to those who have families that are stuck. These resistance movements express the magnitude in which the public disagrees with Trump’s actions to the point where professionals are willing to offer free assistance to those affected.
- The people pressing the Office of Government Ethics on Trump’s tweet regarding the removal of Ivanka Trump’s brand from Nordstrom stores, Trump believes his daughter is being “treated unfairly” by Nordstrom
Major backlash continued when Kellyanne Conway promoted Ivanka Trump’s brand and fashion line in a television interview. “Go buy Ivanka’s stuff,” Kellyanne Conway, counselor to President Trump, told Fox & Friends co-host Steve Doocy.” She then continued to say, “Ivanka Trump has a “wonderful line,” …”I own some of it. I fully, I’m gonna just going to give a free commercial here. Go buy it today everybody. You can find it online.”
This accurately depicts how Trump and his cabinet are unaware of the rules they must follow and how they are all placed under extreme scrutiny due to the angered public, who will do anything to remove him from office. The people have taken it into their own hands to ensure that every wrongdoing is accounted for and never forgotten.
- Many major protests have allowed people to express their discontent with the Trump administration. One of the most notable happens to be the Women’s March, where people all over the nation and the world gathered to not only promote Women’s rights, but immigrant lives, black lives, LGBT+ lives, and many more in a community where all were welcome no matter their race, age, sexual orientation, or gender.
This is what Democracy is supposed to look like: being able to fight for what you believe in. Democracy is a government for the people, by the people. Donald Trump needs to recognize that we will not back down, the people are mad and together they are unstoppable.
