Maggie Lindemann is quickly becoming a social media star. At the young age of 18, she’s gathered an impressive social media following on Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube. She’s released four singles, all of them doing very well on the iTunes chart, and her newest single, Pretty Girl, just had it’s official video released.
When Maggie came out on Twitter and Periscope last year, it sparked a series of criticisms, people erasing her sexuality, which is bisexual, and claiming she was simply “saying she was bisexual” like it is some sort of trend. She responded to the criticisms with several tweets.
my sexuality is not a fucking trend. don’t treat it like one.

Maggie has also talked about how difficult it was for her to come out, saying she was struggling to accept herself, but that’s okay. It takes everyone different amounts of time to accept themselves, and her telling people that she’s struggling with it, also let’s people that are struggling know that they’re not alone. It’s a really human thing to admit that you’re struggling, and fans are able to relate to her and her feelings.
She’ll hopefully be a powerful voice for young queer girls, and her newest video, Pretty Girl, a catchy song, humanizes queer girls as not your stereotype. While there is lot of fetishizing of bi and queer girls in media in general, with people sexualizing them, and refusing to see past the “feisty bisexual” stereotype, her song reflects on the many different types of people girls can be, and how girl’s have a complex personalities.
The song also features two girls in love, and in a relationship, which is positive representation, much needed. Representation humanizes, and let’s people know that they’re seen, and their voices are being heard.
In an interview with OUT, Maggie stated that, “I felt it was important to depict that there’s no wrong way to be a woman, and girls shouldn’t feel pressured to fit into any boxes just because society tells them to. Loving who you want to love is part of being true to yourself.”
It’s a summer time anthem about doing your own thing, and not being just a personality less pretty face that people objectify. The video, while it does feature pretty girls, hopefully reminds girls that they don’t have to just be pretty, they can have a vibrant personality as well. Having a young LGBT+ singer making songs that feature humanized girls and queer representation is super beneficial for the queer community.
Obviously, we’ll have to see how she continues to use her platform, but for the time being, she’s an interesting, LGBT+ teen with creative interests, that represents the queer community positively, and I’ll love watching her career continue.
