Beauty is pulling an all-nighter to finish a project and finishing it well. Beauty is telling someone you love them for the first time. Beauty is sneaking into the house at midnight and eating breakfast at noon. Beauty is subjective.
I believe beauty is whatever makes you feel glad to be alive. Whether that’s getting good grades, listening to your favorite band, going out for a run or for a night out, it’s beautiful. Whatever makes you happy, puts a smile on your face, it’s beautiful. This makes beauty relative, but it is what I truly believe to be beautiful. I believe beauty is dance parties when you should be doing homework and I believe beauty is the bags under one’s eyes after staying up to watch just one more episode on Netflix with no sleep and no regret. Beauty is what makes you feel alive. It’s not always good, and it’s certainly not always what’s good in the long run, but it’s whatever one feels in the moment, because I’m a firm believer in living in the moment, in the present, with loss of respect to the pass and the future even if it’s just for a second. I’m a romantic, I romanticize things many don’t believe is beauty, such as abandoned buildings. But it’s the feeling, the little spark of curiosity I feel just at the mention of it, that I’m in love with the beauty of.
I see beauty in the little things in life as well. I find great beauty not in the rain but how it looks as it falls onto a body of water, not in the cookies but their scent as they spread across a home, and not in one’s appearance but for their love for themselves. One of the keys to happiness I’ve noticed throughout my life is that there is very little that can genuinely impress me, so my expectations have been geared to the smaller pleasures of life. I now live for the book binges on early Sunday mornings, and the first snowfalls of the year, and kind strangers. Those things are so beautiful because they equate to a large amount of pleasure with, well, little effort and little expectation. However, there is one thing that I truly believe beats everything else in all aspects of beauty.
Self love really is one of the most beautiful things of all, especially in a society that makes it so difficult for one to love themselves. I also feel that people have a hard time talking about self-love because there is such a thin line between being confident and being vain. It’s really unfortunate, because self-love and confidence are keys to happiness and something everyone should realize. Those who love themselves have an aspect to them, a beam of light that cannot be replicated by anything else. That is true beauty.
