Mike Pence has broken the tie in a bill that lets states deny Title X family planning funds to Planned Parenthood. Yes, you read that sentence correctly. The Senate has voted to pass the bill which will affect more than 4 million people. Although Republicans see the vote as a victory for states’ rights, this cut is a blatant rollback of funding that will directly harm the many people who depend on Planned Parenthood’s services.

Yesterday, the internet was all over Mike Pence not having dinner with a woman. Today, Pence has helped the reversal of Obama’s regulation that stopped states from cutting federal funds to PP and other clinics. This decrease of funding will take a toll on people’s ability to access health care and their basic human rights. Senator Patty Murray says “It would undo a valuable effort by the Obama administration to ensure that health care providers are evaluated for federal funding based on their ability to provide the services in question, not on ideology.”

Rich white men have repeatedly been given the power to make decisions on behalf of women about their health and privacy. Planned Parenthood remains resilient in hard times like these. PP’s official website states “Title X provides basic preventive health care for millions of people with low incomes or without health insurance. We must speak out immediately and urge our elected officials to protect President Obama’s rule.”
Planned Parenthood encourages everyone to call their senator and attest to the repercussions of this attack on Title X. Make no mistake, this could be a life or death situation for the multitude of beneficiaries that receive advice, contraceptives, screenings and more.
