November 8th, 2016 was an awful day. Donald Trump was elected President of the United States. I was angry, I’m still angry, and I’m not just gonna remain silent. No matter how impossible it seems, your voice can be heard, if you’re persistent enough.
- Write for a political platform or blog yourself! Writing for Affinity is a great way to express your mind regarding the political decisions. However, you can also speak your mind through your own blog, or even your social media accounts!
- Go to marches! Attending the Women’s march was one of the most rewarding, and memorable experiences of my life. I will NEVER forget that. I was so proud of the world on that day.
- Call/write your local congressman! I know it seems like a waste of time, but trust me, if you call enough, you’ll voice will eventually be heard.
- Go to town hall meetings! Especially at this time in history, more and more organizations are finding ways to get their voices heard.
- Educate yourself! In this day in age, information is always at our fingertips. It’s really important to know what is going on, even if the situations don’t directly affect you. Even something as simple as getting CNN updates sent to your phone can help you understand what’s really going on.
- Follow activists on social media platforms! Whether its following Lauren Jauregui on Twitter, or Sophia Bush, these amazing people will always provide inspiration and specific ways of getting involved.
- Get involved in clubs at your school! Schools usually have great opportunities to talk about the current political situation and find ways to really get their message across.
- VOTE! I’m only 17, so I couldn’t vote in the 2016 elections, but you better believe I will be voting in the 2018 midterm elections. It’s just the beginning for me. Even if you’re not old enough now, you will be someday.
So whether you’re 10 or 100, there are many ways to get your voice heard and out there. Yes, while being respectful of other peoples opinions, and the election system is also very important, it is also crucial to know that you do not just have to remain silent. When it comes to people’s rights as human beings, we should not stop until everyone is treated EQUALLY.
