Police brutality has always been an issue in the United States, especially for black people. Over the last few years, many cases of police brutality have gotten immense amounts of media attention, which resulted in more and more people learning about the corruption in police forces across the country. Many people, now, have taken measures to make sure that murders committed by police officers don’t go unnoticed.
Since it’s formation in 1920, The American Civil Liberties Union has worked to protect and defend the rights of people living in the United States. They support same sex marriage, the right to an abortion, and oppose all sorts of discrimination.
In May of 2015, the ACLU of California released an app called “Mobile Justice”. This app, which is available in the App Store and Google Play, allows its users to record any police encounter on their phone and send the video to ACLU, where it will be preserved even if the phone it was recorded on ends up being stolen or damaged.
Too many police officers abuse their power and authority and mistreat, or even kill, people without any reasonable cause. Innocent people are constantly getting hurt at the hands of the police, yet the police get away with it, partly because of the lack of evidence.
- By hitting the “Record” button, your phone will start recording the audio and video, then you can click “Stop” to stop recording.
- After you stop recording, the video will automatically be sent to the ACLU, and a copy will be saved onto your phone.
- After the video is sent, you have the option of reporting information of the incident, such as the location, the officer’s name, and more. You can choose to skip the report.
- There’s also a “Witness” option which will notify you when someone nearby is recording an incident.
“Mobile Justice” has proven to be extremely useful, as it has helped to bring awareness to various different incidents of police brutality.
In a time where social media is prevalent, recording and releasing these videos can have a huge impact on society. If videos of police brutality were never released to the public, corrupt police officers would always get a pass for their crimes without facing any consequences.
Police brutality has effected the lives of thousands of people. We need to use all of the resources available to us to make sure that those horrible cases don’t go ignored. We cannot continue to let innocent people die at the hands of those who are supposed to protect us.
