Last night, Bill Maher uttered a word that horrified the Internet — a word which holds hundreds and hundreds of years of oppression. Now, sure, this isn’t the first time Bill Maher has said something to the shock and disgust of the public, but it seems to be a nail in the coffin.
Let’s set the scene: Real Time‘s Bill Maher is interviewing Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse, a conservative known to be… “not racist”. Maher called himself a “House N—–” as a joke, to the uncomfortable smile of Sasse, and the applause of the audience. What’s more disturbing: the applause from the audience or the silence and general allowance of the comment to be made by Ben Sasse?
As I said, this isn’t the first time Maher has had an indiscretion at the expense of minorities. In 2015, Maher responded to the arrest of Texas teen Ahmed Mohamed in such an inappropriate, Islamophobic way. “For the last 30 years,” he said, “it’s been one culture that has been blowing s—t up over and over again.” He also said, in 2014, “Islam is the problem, correct. All religions are the problem, but especially this one.”
Bill Maher is a privileged, overpaid, ableist, racist, Islamophobic man who uses minorities as leverage for his comedy. He has, time and time again, made statements beyond offensive to many cultures without any sort of punishment. His political incorrectness gives certain privileged Americans a taste of the “good ole days” where no one had to take responsibility for the hateful comments they made. It’s time that he is shut down for good — we cannot keep allowing these comments to be made. It’s time for him to take responsibility for his actions and the punishments that go with it.
