In an world that seems to move faster and faster every day, it’s important to take time for a very important person. That’s right: you!
There’s an aphorism that essentially advises us to put time and effort into the longest and most personal relationship you’ll ever have. With a generally shifted focus toward mental health (in the wake of drastically and constantly rising number of affected persons), it seems that “self care” routines and “self help” books are in great abundance. However, these resources aren’t always met with open arms. Many people groan and roll their eyes, claiming that self care doesn’t work for them.
In a way, they’re right. Self care doesn’t magically get rid of any problems. It doesn’t press a button and suddenly fix the world or the world’s perception. But saying that every single thing on the seemingly endless list of options has absolutely no effect on your mood, even if minimal or temporary, is almost as preposterous as saying that they are the cure to every ailment.
Even if you’re mentally healthy, indulging in a little bit of self care can always do more help than harm. Most of these are cheap, easy activities that can easily fill up a lazy weeknight or become the focus of your weekend. It all depends on how you approach it, and I suggest approaching with a positive outlook.
In a show of just how simple self care can be and how easy it is to make it a healthy habit, here is the kicker of this article: a beginner’s guide.
1. Make Tea
Making tea (or any warm drink that you prefer, be it hot chocolate or milk) is almost like a hug to yourself.
2. Take a Warm Shower
Maybe standing under the showered for 40 minutes isn’t eco-friendly, but a quick jump in might be a welcome refresher.
3. Take a Bath
Honestly, this one is the tried and true staple of most lists like these.
4. Light some candles
Find a scent that you like, and then let it fill up the room wherever you are. Instant ambiance.
5. Exercise
If you love heading to the gym, then go for it. Otherwise, you can download a yoga app, do some home circuits, or go for a quick jog or walk.
6. Opt for the Outdoors
Getting a breath of nature, even if it’s just the tree in your front yard, can have effects beyond belief.
7. Look for a Change of Scenery
If you’re going to the above option, great! You’ve hit two birds with one stone. However, this could be as simple as moving rooms.
8. Watch your favorite TV show or movie
This is a simple, almost guaranteed feel-good formula.
9. Read
Another way to fictional escape? Count me in.
10. Write
Clear your mind by journaling a little bit.
11. Get artsy
Freedom of expression, anyone? From scrapbooks to paintings to calligraphy to adult coloring books, arts and crafts are now more accessible than ever.
12. Plan Something
Thinking about a time besides the here and now might seem counterintuitive to the theory of mindfulness, but it’s your way of taking the future and making it something to be reckoned with in the present.
13. Reach Out
Some people love having a little self care routine on their own. Others like to invite friends. Find your fit!
14. Treat yourself
Indulge in a healthy snack. Binge eating? Not fun. Fueling your body? Much better.
15. Unplug
Remember, your goal is to focus on yourself. Put your phone on airplane mode and let the notifications silence themselves.
