On Thursday, it was announced that President Trump would donate $1 million of his personal funds to assist in Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts. While many Trump supporters applauded him for this donation announcement, he has also received a great amount of backlash. Donald Trump has made donation promises in the past, but when it comes to actually giving up his money, he doesn’t have the best reputation. Last year, Trump announced a $1 million donation to a veteran’s group, but it wasn’t until four months later that the money was actually donated after intense scrutiny from multiple media outlets.
Trump’s reputation for not carrying out donation promises isn’t the only reason he’s receiving backlash for his recent Hurricane Harvey donation. The amount of $1 million seems strange considering this is coming from the same man, who in 2012, was willing to give up to $5 million for President Obama’s birth certificate. So, while $1 million may seem like a generous donation, it is only 1/5 of the amount Trump was willing to give to prove his ridiculous “birther conspiracy.”
Those affected by Hurricane Harvey deserve and need all the help they can get.
