Mayor Rahm Emmanuel regards that citizens of Chicago, IL “have nothing to worry about” — the city is officially a “Trump-free zone.” This statement followed the eradication of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy made by the POTUS.
While in office, Barack Obama introduced DACA in 2012 in order to prevent “nearly 800,000 people who came to the U.S. as children from being deported.” Trump recently made the decision to revoke the program, yet still claims to have a “great love” for the so-called Dreamers — i.e. those who have been aided by Obama’s prior decision to implement DACA.
During his speech at Chicago’s Solorio Academy High School regarding the act of removing DACA, Rahm Emmanuel sought out to motivate and push forward the dreams and work ethic of students and young DACA recipients: “To all the Dreamers that are here in this room and the city of Chicago: you are welcome in the city of Chicago. This is your home and you have nothing to worry about.”
He also offered the promise that “Chicago, our schools, our neighborhoods, our city, as it relates to what President Trump said, will be a Trump-free zone. You have nothing to worry about. And I want you to know this, and I want your families to know this. And rest assured, I want you to come to school … and pursue your dreams.”
