International supermodel Bella Hadid made her political opinions very clear in an Instagram post to her 16 million Instagram followers on Thursday, as she denounced President Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Overturning 70 years of international consensus, Trump has put an end to any existing possibility of peace between the Palestinians and Israelis. There is a very obvious reason that this move has not been made by past leaders. Recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine is to further cement the U.S.’s pointless one-sided arbitration. Israel time and time again fails to comply with international law through the expansion of their settlements into Palestinian territory and instead of just helping them get away with it, this time, the U.S. is joining them in this violation.
Bella’s father, Mohamed Hadid, is Palestinian. He was born in Nazareth during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, but fled to Syria later in his childhood. It is no wonder that Bella feels so deeply for her people, as for years they have been treated like prisoners in their own homes.
This is not the first time the Bella has shown pride in her heritage. Earlier this year, Gigi Hadid, Bella’s older sister, paid tribute to her roots by posing for the first cover of Vogue Arabia. Bella followed suit in September saying that not only was she honored to be working with Vogue, “but specifically to represent and cherish my half-Palestinian blood from my father and his strong, loving, wonderful Arab side of my family.”
