Obdulia Sanchez, an 18-year-old girl who drove drunk the night she caused a fatal car crash, has been sentenced for more than six years in prison. This is because the crash, in fact, did kill her 14-year old sister Jacqueline Sanchez as well as injure 15-year-old Manuela Seja. The crash, which occurred back in July 2017, has gained new traction as new information has been released and brought up by various news outlets.
In the Merced County Superior Court, Sanchez stated,
If she does keep up good behavior, however, she will be eligible for release on September 21, 2020. This story has significance with the rise in popularity of live-streaming applications and use of social media around the world.
Her family’s reaction, however, shows a different side of grief. Back then when her father was interviewed, he told authorities how he saw the footage that came directly from the incident (it was originally posted on Obudlia’s private Instagram account but then was circulated by one of her followers and viewed by thousands). Her father stated,
“I don’t know how to feel. My one daughter killed my other daughter.”
The father had also admitted that Obdulia did drink alcohol, but “not around him” and mentioned that the car crash was an “accident.” However, in the video, Sanchez was seen standing over her sister’s blood-soaked body, predicting how she would go to jail because of this. The Merced County Court gave an official ruling of six years and four months for child endangerment, driving while intoxicated, and also gross vehicular manslaughter (which leads to a suspension in your driver’s license in California — if you are convicted of it while intoxicated).
