If you thought things in the United States were getting even less progressive, following only 96 years of women having the right to vote, many supporters of the Republican candidate, Donald Trump, would like to take that right away. After Nate Silver tweeted  maps of how votes in the U.S  would look like if only women voted, then if only men voted, #RepealThe19th began to trend.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time the hashtag has been used, but this time more people have shown excitement over rejecting women voters in the polling boxes. Even some women support “waiving their vote” if it means Clinton’s defeat.

Seeing women supporting the repeal of the amendment that gave them a soapbox to stand on and be listened to, is – at first laughable, but now it’s just sad. If they want their favored candidate to win, not voting shouldn’t be a part of that plan, but advocating, as much as it pains me to say, can be. How can women- or anyone in fact – be okay with silencing a prominent number in the polls.

According to a fact sheet from CAWP;

“The number of female voters has exceeded the number of male voters in every presidential election since 1964 “

Women are so much more than numbers on polls, too. Women are advocates, politicians, and activists. Right or left, conservative or liberal, women have an impact on America’s future. You won’t silence anyone by taking rights away, or even making jokes on doing so, if you look at history, marginalized groups always stand up to injustices.

Taking the right to vote away from women is ineffective, and not to mention sexist. If you don’t want women to vote so bad, build a time machine, and if you’re a woman who would give up her right to vote just to see Trump win, then don’t vote. In fact: don’t advocate either, jump in that same time machine and don’t get out until its the 1800s.

It’s sad to see people be in favor of repealing our right to vote, but what is even sadder is, seemingly, it’s the only chance Trump has. If Trump’s campaign was as successful as he promised it would be, why is repealing the 19th amendment the only way he’d win?

When I'm not writing, I enjoy spending most of my time eating ice cream, looking at pictures of dogs, or indulging in passionate rants about socio-political issues. I also love swings. I want to study theater and political science in college, and I want to go to Latin American countries and volunteer by empowering women and showing them the importance of using knowledge for power and liberation.
