The animation and comic book industry is best known for being an area of visual and media arts run by and for cis-men. This alienates a huge amount of comic book fans, particularly women, girls, and everyone else who doesn’t identify as male. Therefore I have made a list of four women animators and/or comic book artists everyone should know and their most notable works.
1. Rumiko Takahashi is a manga artist known for iconic manga and anime series such as Urusei Yatsura,Ranma 1/2, and Inuyasha. Most of her work deals with gender identity, most notably Ranma 1/2 as the title character changes gender numerous times throughout the work and the heroine, Akane, is portrayed as physically and mentally strong and capable as a martial artist.
2. Natasha Allegri is a story board artist, animator, and comic book illustrator most known for her work on Adventure time and her own youtube series Bee and Puppy Cat. The latter is a short youtube animation series that parodies the magical girl genre. Bee is a lazy and constantly unemployed temp worker whose life is changed when puppy cat falls out of the sky.
3. Jennifer Yuh Nelson is a storyboard artist and director best known for being the animation director of Dream Work’s Kung Fu Panda Franchise. She won an Annie award for storyboarding the opening of the film and was nominated for an academy award for her work on Kung Fu Panda
4. Fiona Staples is a comic book artist best known for her work on the hit series Saga. Saga is a racially and gender diverse space epic about two parents and their new born during an intergalactic war.
