With 2017 fast approaching, so is the new school semester. New year, new semester, which means there is a whole lot of room for new beginnings and breaking old habits. If you did things last semester that you’re not proud of, such as writing an essay the night before or skipping way too many classes, you can totally change those habits around and start the new semester with some new semester resolutions.
1) Get more sleep.
Getting 8 hours of sleep may seem unrealistic when you are in college, but if you’re the type of person who only gets 5 hours of sleep per night, there is always room for improvement. To get more hours of sleep, you can try sleeping 30 minutes earlier every night to get this new habit going. For example, if you normally fall asleep at 1 a.m., you can start trying to go to sleep at 12:30 instead.
2) Stop skipping class.
If you’re in college, you have probably skipped a class here and there, which is totally okay if it was for something super important, such as finishing that final paper that’s due in six hours. However, if you’re skipping three classes every week, that is not okay. Try setting a goal of only skipping one or two classes a month. Do the math and figure out how much you’re paying for each class. You’ll soon realize you’re wasting too much money by skipping class.
3) Budget & save more.
In college, it is very easy to lose track of how much you’re spending, especially if you tend to go out a lot or just like to shop in general. Creating a budget will help you track and manage your money, so try setting up a weekly or monthly budget to help you manage your spending.
4) Don’t be so hard on yourself.
We all know that our grades matter and that we should be getting good grades on everything, but sometimes it isn’t always that easy. If you get a bad grade here and there, don’t beat yourself up for it because we all make mistakes and as cliché as it is, no one is ever perfect. So, instead of blaming yourself, try to learn from your mistakes and only use that bad grade on the assignment to motivate you to do better on the next one.
5) Stop procrastinating.
This one’s a tough one, but if you know you’re going to end up on Netflix or your phone after reading just one page of your textbook, give yourself a reward to look forward to after you’ve finished studying a chapter or after finishing two pages of your essay. For example, treat yourself to an episode of your favorite show after you’ve finished studying a section for your midterm.
