Welcome to the Twilight Zone! Inauguration Day is upon us and Donald Trump is now president of the United States. Although his presidency isn’t ideal, there are important things to remember while we are having a transition of power.
1. You are not too young to form an opinion – If you are a teen or even younger and have a different opinion than your parents, you may have experienced someone telling you that you are “too young” to understand politics. Please remember that forming your own opinion is important and your opinion matters, no matter your age!
2. You don’t have to march on Washington to make a difference – We all see in the news and media information about marches going on in D.C. Don’t feel left out! There are other ways to contribute to the resistance. Donate, volunteer, research, contact legislators, write letters, vote, etc. Speak out and express your opinion!
3. It’s okay to end a friendship over a political opinion – If you feel you don’t agree with one of your friend’s ideas or opinions, it is okay to end the friendship! Political opinions reflect on one’s view of the world, and if you don’t agree, it is okay to stop talking to a certain people. Especially if you feel their political views reflect racism/sexism/homophobia/islamophobia.
4. Save the date, November 6th, 2018 – On November 6th, 2018, the midterm elections will take place. Availability will open up in the Senate and you can vote to make a difference if you don’t like how the government is doing. Get out and vote (if you are old enough!!)
5. Do not shame others for their opinion – Everyone has their eyes on a different prize, but don’t let your opinion cloud your judgment and words. Make sure to practice civil discourse and don’t shame others for liking a different candidate than you do.
6. You can engage in political arguments – I know many people avoid the topic of the election, especially because it is a touchy subject and people get hyped up over it. You don’t have to avoid it, though! Again, use civil discourse to spread and express your opinion. Don’t let different opinions stop you from expressing yours.
Don’t let Donald Trump’s words hurt you, let them anger you. Remember how much of a difference you can make, and don’t let him win. Lets fight back, America, it is never too late.
