A new president has taken the Oath of Office and Obama is on his long-needed vacation, but seeing him leave is hard for everyone in this country who has supported him since day one. From his active role in the LGBT+ community to his strive for equality to his deep friendship with Joe Biden, I am proud to say that Obama was my President. Now I give to you 6 songs that will put you in the #FarewellObama feels.
1) “All I Want” by Kodaline
This song embodies the word “feel”. It was featured in The Fault In Our Stars movie so you know it is going to be a heart-strings puller. While I was listening to this song I could not help but crying thinking of Obama walking out the Oval Office door one last time and leaving half of the United States helpless.
2) “This is the Last Time” by The National
The National is a fairly new band to me, but the moment I listened to this dull-alternative song, I was in awe. When I hear the opening lines when they sing “I wish everybody knew what’s so great about you”, I thought of how many citizens we not fond of Obama’s presidency, but he indeed did a lot for the youth to be able to lead in the future.
3) “Never Forget You” by Zara Larsson
This song has been extremely popular over the past few months and has been played through every pop radio station. The title suits itself, but none of us will ever forget the Obama and Biden “bro-mance” which erupted into thousand of memes being spread throughout social media.
4) “The Struggle” by Grizfolk
To follow the trend of alternative songs, I picked this classic one by Grizfolk to express the challenges that we may face ahead without Obama, and with the new President. Halfway through the song just before the grand chorus, they sing “you’re young enough to say what you feel … sometimes it’s all that we got”; these powerful lyrics proclaim the right of us to speak what is on our mind and change what we do not like as Obama explained in his Farewell Address. After all, it is the people that rule this country.
5) “Take It All Back” by Judah & The Lion
Through out the chorus of this folky-rock song, the band re-states the lyrics, “I’ll take it all back just to have you,” which symbolizes the wishful thinking of many Americans that we can go back to 2008 just to have 8 more years of Obama (and Biden of course). Some may also say that they wish time would reverse back to election night to change the results. *sad face*
6) “Sweetest Goodbye” by Maroon 5
To end this soundtrack of sadness on a fairly light note, I chose this song by Maroon 5 that will make you think “wow this really does describe my emotions” while listening to it. It follows a storyline of distance and that you will never abandoned the one you are saying your “sweetest goodbye” to. After these eight great years of the Obama Presidency, we will never forget the lasting impact he has had on our society and the continued support we will deliver in return.
