I’ve heard it all from people. They say good things. They say bad things. But know one truly knows what they are saying until after its been said.
Most of the times, people don’t realize the severity of what they are saying to someone. Just a simple “hello” or “how was you day” could be the deciding factor in determining if someone ends their life or not. We never really know what someone is going through and the reality is we may never know, but as human beings the least we could do is make sure that we evoke love and patience to all that we come in contact with.
I hear people all the time speaking nothing but hate and disdain and it pains me. With so much violence and hatred going on in the world, the last thing any of us should be doing is trying to make someone else feel small about themselves. As humans we’re better than that. As children of God, he has called us to be better than that.
I saw a scripture today that immediately stuck out to me. It was 1 Corinthians 16:14 and it stated “Do everything with love.“
Since the beginning of time, we have been called to love one another. Throughout time, we have been reminded that we are to love one another regardless of the differences that might set us a part. There were times when we were separated by ethnicity and it resulted in catastrophic events such as the Holocaust. In addition, other instances that have plagued us have stemmed from difference in color. There was once a time when an African-American male such as myself could not receive an education or drink from the same water fountains as my white peers.
Although we have surpassed dark days such as those, the world we live still has not progressed from all of its past mistakes. With hatred and bigotry spewing from almost every corner of the Earth, a change must come if we are to let future generations roam the Earth one day.
No matter someone’s race, religion, or sexual orientation we should always aim to treat one another as if they were no different. As Mahatma Gandhi used to preach, we have to be the change we wish to see in the world.
We are better than those that have come before us. We will use our voices to enact justice and preach love because we don’t know what the next person may be facing and its better to stand for something than to just sit back and do nothing.
One word. That’s all it takes to either save or change someone’s life. Think about the next time you are about to speak. I hope I encouraged you to look at your words a little differently; be kind and go forth and spread love.
