Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

Meet Willie Gary: One Of The World’s Most Successful Attorneys

Nicknamed, “The Giant Killer,” Willie Gary is one of the world’s most successful attorneys. He earned the name by defeating some of the biggest, most known companies in his clients’ defense; one of the most recent and popular cases being the $23.6B lawsuit against R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, in which they were ordered to pay Gary’s client. Along with his law successes, Willie is also a motivational speaker and recognized by Ebony Magazine as one of the most influential African-Americans in their top 100 list.

So, how did he get to this admirable place in life?

Well, recently, I was fortunate enough to hear Mr. Gary speak at Dunbar Elementary School in East St. Louis, Illinois. He came to motivate the students and also showed a video of his many accomplishments and what it took for him to get to where he is now, in hopes that it would be an inspiration to them. What was meant for the students, seemed to inspire me the most. From someone who strives to be nothing but successful, I had many questions of how he acquired his.

Afterward, I had the privilege of having a very influencing lunch with Mr. Gary. I got the chance to hear where it all started for him and what he calls his, “humble beginnings.” Born into a family of 11, things didn’t always come easy for him. Willie grew up in a small, farming community where he would eventually open his hometown’s first African American law office. Gary has done many notable things in his life, one of the most recognizable being his contribution to HBCU’s. Willie’s alma mater is Shaw University, which he has donated $10.1M to and continues to donate to other HBCU’s across the country.

I’m thrilled that I now count on him as a mentor and in my short time of knowing him, he has taught me valuable lessons that will last a lifetime. I know that nothing comes easy, time waits for no one, and to always be passionate in whatever it is you do.
