Let’s face it – we all live busy lives. Every day from morning to night our days are filled with activities such as school, work, and extracurricular activities. We rarely get time to actually sit down and rest. This pattern can cause trouble. Being on the go from morning to night has a toll on our mental health and can cause us to deteriorate physically and mentally. So, what is the solution? SELF CARE. I recently did a youtube video where I discussed the importance of self-care. I will link the video at the end of this article and try to emulate the same message I got across in my video.
While we do not all have mental illness, we all have mental health. What this means is that even if we do not have a mental illness such as depression, anxiety, etc. we still need to take care of ourselves. There are many ways that we can practice self-care and incorporate it into our everyday lives. For instance, having a skin care routine every morning or night is an easy way to practice self-care. It takes our mind off of things and allows us a chance to unwind. If skin care is not your thing, something as simple as eating healthier or working out can also be a form of self-care. The specific act itself is not important, it is just the fact that you are taking time out of your day to do something you love and take your mind off of your busy schedules.
All of this may sound overwhelming at first and trust me when I first learned about self-care, I was very confused. For me, what really got the ball rolling was when a friend and classmate of mine committed suicide. I was not the best of friends with him but we had talked and has many classes together. When I found out the news I was shaken, to say the least. Goosebumps filled my body and I thought long and hard about how to do a call to action. The simplest way was for me to practice self-care. By taking a little time every day and incorporation self-care into my daily routine, I improved my mental health.
So, I call on YOU, whoever is reading this article, to take care of yourselves and find something you can do every day to practice self-care. Make sure it is something you like so it is a habit rather than a chore.
