School districts around the United States have decided to cancel school this upcoming Wednesday. Why? Because it seems that schools have realized they cannot function without women.
The creators of the Women’s March on Washington have asked women around the world to skip work, to not spend any money, and to wear the color red as a symbol of support of the strike on Wednesday, March 8, 2017. As for the goal for the strike, it is not only to protest Trump’s offensive language towards women but, to also show how much women immensely impact their communities.
For example, a district in Virginia has cancelled school as a result of the ‘Day Without Women’ strike taking place on March 8, 2017.
Because of an insufficient number of staff, on March 6, the Alexandria City Public School District (ACPC), located in Virginia, sent out a newsletter to parents saying, “It has come to our attention that as of today, more than 300 staff members have requested leave this Wednesday, March 8 […] ACPS has decided to close schools for students for the day.”
With 16 schools in the district total, the superintendent of schools, Alvin L. Crawley, Ed.D., also mentioned that, “This is not a decision that was made lightly”. We have to also acknowledge, with the closure of these schools many will lose out on the meals they depend on when going to school.
Although a number of women are not able to afford an absence, many are still wearing red in support of the strike.
Fighting for what is right is never wrong, ladies!
