[dropcap]S[/dropcap]ex. It’s everywhere, it’s all around us. Sex is the motives of basically everything that you watch in movies, what you read in literaturesand in your head. There’s no point in hiding and even banishing sex since it’s already long-established and the content is becoming even more accessible. The notion of “waiting for the right time” has slowly vanished as the term casual sex emerged. As it sounds silly for people to fool themselves with the excuse of being too busy, and having little or no time to handle a real relationship. Although secretly, they are longing for intimacy, where no-strings-attached type of sex would be something in-demand and convenient.
The concept itself probably has been around for centuries with people calling it differently, but what made it seem acceptable in our present society? Mass media plays a role as medium that perpetuates it. The concept of Hook-Up Culture has hurdled the media recently by becoming ceaseless headlines for popular online blogs that aims Millennial readers. The trend has been around for quite some time and undoubtedly is trying to convey one clear message: sexual liberation. Nevertheless, the liberation is being questioned as many people would act in an unseemly and immoral behavior. The principle of hooking-up fosters an idea that being emotionally invested to another individual is uncalled for. Everything is expected to be quick, casual, and neat. As moralists probably would argue of how the trend will damage morality, arguments can’t win over the fact that the buzz spread are consistently being served to remind the youth that it is a normal thing to do.
In the recent decade, the rising of dating apps has evolved from soulmate searching to the most favorable tool that are utilized for hook-up purposes. For instance, Tinder serves a convenient function in picking up prospective matches by using Facebook information to create your profile. Profiles on Tinder provided the information that consists of your first name, age, and profile pictures.
Tinder works by finding your potential matches based on their proximity to you, and if you interested with somebody, swipe right to ‘like’ them, and if they’re not that desirable, simply swipe left to ‘pass’.
What made it interesting is how Tinder is all about mutual attraction because if they’ve also swiped you right, then — voila! Now that you matched with them, you can start crafting up your pick up lines.
The way Tinder works is somehow leaving the user with relatively short time to decide whether their potential partner is attractive enough or not. If you’re long enough in the world of Tindering and actually in it for the sex, two seconds should be enough to decide the next person you’re physically attracted with to be granted an access around area near your crotch. Unlike OKCupid, the dating app requires more time investments for the users to fill up their profiles whilst swamped by sets of questions that later will be calculated with algorithm to find a potential partner that is likely to match their personality. The comparison between these two dating apps that initially serve the same purpose is contrasting on the different approaches used in evaluating potential partners, where the first one solely designed to give a quick impression and sexually objectifying rather than intended to build an emotional connection.
Despite the causal effect is not yet examined and gave an obvious outcome, this behavior that gradually perpetuated by technological advancement is noteworthy. Casual sex is strikingly different from traditional dating motives, whereas the need to obtain deeper emotional connection of one’s partner is unnecessary and only seek out to fulfill physical satisfaction, although the chances of that is ironically unforeseeable. Some might find that the trend seem enticing. Engaging in frisky encounters with another individual gives an impression to avail oneself a new kind of freedom that perceived as strength by displaying how tough they are capable of being detached and prove one’s sexual prowess.
Will the current youth be the next legacy of neglect? Are we soaked in overloaded information that blinds us to accept such kind of movement? The term itself, Hook-Up Culture, is yet still ill-defined. How come the youth could readily jump in and conform to the stream of something obscure? The importance of clearly getting the grasp of this development is essential as it comes with the need to enforce consciousness to the youth of their sexual health, and establish even the simplest skill of decision-making. The Hook-Up Culture may promises an exciting adventure and freedom that lurk our most vulnerable generation that are infamous for their impulsivity. By some means, the freedom will come with a price of morality that is slowly stripped away. In a blink of an eye, we won’t realize that society’s values have shifted.
