Singer-songwriter and pianist Greyson Chance publicly came out as gay today on Instagram.
“I came to fully recognize that I was gay when I was sixteen. I decided not to publicize my sexuality largely due to a matter of privacy, as I was still trying to find comfort and confidence within my own skin. Further, I always found conversations regarding music, politics, art, books – and the greatness of Nas’ catalog – to be far more interesting than what type of guy I was into. This is still true today.”
Chance became an overnight sensation in 2010 when he posted a cover of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” , which he performed at his school’s talent show. Ellen DeGeneres discovered the Youtube video and invited him on her show. Over the next year, Chance released his first album – Hold On ‘til the Night – and embarked on a world tour.
In his coming out post, Chance also offered advice to anyone struggling with their sexuality.
“I encourage anyone who is navigating their sexuality to devote as much time as they need to the process of finding self-confidence, self-acceptance, and self-love. Hell, for me, it took years to write this message. Nevertheless, I figured now was the time to let a few more friends know that I am happy, I am here for you, and I am proud of who I am.”
As a long-time fan of Greyson, I am incredibly proud of his decision to unapologetically be himself. However, he is still the exact same person to me – still phenomenally talented, insightful, and introspective, all qualities that are exuded in his songs.
Chance’s recent projects include an EP called Somewhere Over My Head (2016) and a single, “Seasons,” released last month.
According to a blog post Chance wrote on his website, “Seasons” is about how “life does not move in years, but…in seasons.” At the beginning of each new chapter in our lives, “there always exists a brief moment of clarity.”
To Greyson, from Enchancers around the world: We give you all our love and wish you the best of luck in this new season of your life.
