Dear Kanye West: You Are Still My Problematic Fav, Sadly

Dear Kanye,

I wish people would stop trying to diagnose you with a mental illness. Whether you have one or not, they should really leave that to the doctors. I’m not going to dance around the issue of your tweets: they’re pretty outrageous in wording and, well, there are a lot of them; one after the other, preaching to an audience that may not like what you’re saying but will retweet you anyway.

There are countless tabloids and entertainment television shows bringing out their resident “therapists”, trying to analyze your past and diagnose you as bipolar, anti-social, narcissistic, depressed . . . anything they can think of. But they’re not your doctors and neither are all of the twitter soldiers and angry bloggers who think they can deem you anything they please.

Now, one thing everyone can agree on? You’re very confident in yourself; so I don’t need to reassure you that you are an artist first and foremost. If you want to change the name of your album 5 times, go ahead. If you want to brag about your top selling albums, go ahead.

Critics may say that you don’t speak enough on political issues or introduce the world to new art forms, but I’m not totally sure when critics were allowed to define what an artist must do or say to be an artist. What’s excessive to them is art to you, so if you want to be the Michaelangelo of 2016, be it. If an artist whose net worth and record sales are nothing compared to yours decides to attack your work unprovoked, go ahead and let him know that you are what inspires him.

Now, let’s be real: Both you and Khalifa “let a stripper trap you.”,there is nothing wrong with being a sex worker, it is as much as a valid career as being a doctor. At this point, as an adult, Amber Rose’s personal life or her child is none of your business. However, both you and Rose are on the same level after she decided to mention some really foolish and childish rumors from your past. She is not above you in any way and deserves no applause for her outbursts either. And no, you didn’t make Taylor Swift famous. But you might have finally gotten her name out into the hip-hop world while she was only relevant in Pop and Country. This doesn’t allow you to sexualize her either. Seems like time and time again you feel as though you own certain women. Your lyrics are ridden with misogynistic undertone, but after reading reviews of “The Life of Pablo,” I’ve realized that half of them are reaching and the others are not new. If critics want to label you as a woman-hater they need take down this disgusting problem from the inside of Hip-Hop itself instead of trying to paint you as the first and only rapper to ever use the word “bitch” or “hoe” in a song lyric. Now trust me, just because it’s commonplace does not mean it’s okay, but if I don’t like it, I won’t buy it, and neither should anyone else that feels that way.

People are lining up for blocks to buy your shoes. Your concerts are sold out. The numbers say it all, Kanye, including the debt you also tweeted about. Money may not make you but your music does. Your lyrics have always been well thought out and inspiring, from “Through The Wire” to “Ultralight Beam.” You’ve produced hit tracks for Jay-Z, Mos Def, Lil Wayne, John Legend, Nas, Brandy, Madonna, Common, and Janet Jackson to name a few. Your style of sampling is copied by aspiring artists from all over.

Anyone who knows the story of your love for Kim Kardashian-West knows that it’s real, and should not judge your relationship based on tabloid nonsense.

You’re not insane, Kanye West (unless you say so). You’re an extremely talented artist and a father who happened to get his hands on 21.9 million twitter followers. Could you imagine if someone like Prince, Kurt Kobain, Michael Jackson, or Abraham Lincoln had a twitter when they first started becoming popular? You’re nowhere near as influential or maybe even as talented as they were, but you all have on thing in common: you have a lot to say, and nobody is going to stop you from saying it — Not Taylor Swift, not George Bush, and certainly not some social media trolls looking to get your attention.

Don’t let anyone criticize you for loving yourself like Kanye loves Kanye.

Sincerely,

Someone who appreciates good music.

P.S. Beyonce did have one of the best music videos OF ALL TIME.
