Recently in Bangladesh, army militants have killed twenty people, the six militants were killed by police., there were reportedly up to 9 there. Police say that 13 of the hostages have been freed from the Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka, where one of the suspected gun men were captured. Police have said the attacks came the same day a Hindu Priest was hacked to death in his temple, this incident is the latest in a wave of killings across Bangladesh, of academics, secularised bloggers and ethnic minorities in the country, such as Christians and Hindus.
Bangladesh is an area of the world known for it’s natural beauty and landscape, but however, floods in these areas have caused a massive problem economically, however, most of the capital city is in good shape and an attractive area for tourists to travel to, this generates a little money for the people in the surrounding area. The fact that an event like this occurred just as Bangladesh is close to becoming a newly industrialised country, this will have massive problems for them in the long run.
The Bangladeshi army say that the people killed were either Italian or or Japanese, while some officials have confirmed that some of the people caught in the shoot out may have included an Indian boy and a US Citizen. This means that outrage could be felt through out the world as people of all different races were exposed to the violence, creating it an issue of global concern. Italy’s Foreign Minister went on to confirm that nine of the people killed were from Italy, while one of the other Italian nationals remains missing. causing it to be an area of concern and sympathy for people around the world, the pain their families are going through must be unimaginable.
The president of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, spoke in an interview and pleaded with the Islamist terrorists, saying ‘Islam is a religion of peace, stop using the name of Islam in your attacks’. this interview caused many districts and sub-districts in Bangladesh to set up “anti-terrorist” committees, promoting their hatred towards the extremists, who are at fault for this dreadful incident,. The country is mainly muslim but officially recognised as a secular place.
Some diners managed to escape including a Bangladeshi man who took cover in an adjacent building, and an Argentine Chef. The attack was claimed by the Islamic State, marks a soaring escalation in a campaign by Islamic Militants, targeting individuals who advocate a secular approach in mostly muslim Bangladesh which has been reeling from a wave of murders of religious minorities and secular activists by suspected Islamist militants.
Home to almost 150 million muslims, the county has been doing well so far to keep themselves out of any trouble and being somehow targeted by radicalised nations, such as the Islamic State, could these killings be the start of another country falling to the feet of the IS? We hope not.
