Beyoncé has graced our TV screens, and our ears, since the late 90’s. From her soulful pop group hits, to her iconic solo career as the singer that we know and love today (who asked the men to put a ring on it and the bitches to bow down), Beyoncé has made herself a presence in the media and music industry and made sure everyone knew who exactly the real queen is. But behind the catchy choruses and captivating choreography is woman who hasn’t tried to hide her inner feminist, whether it be through her fierce lyrics or her actions. Here are five reasons why I believe she is an amazing feminist.
- She practices intersectional feminism. This shouldn’t be a hard concept for the queen to grasp since she herself is, obviously, black. Beyoncé has made countless attempts to shine light on issues that every single woman faces but recently, particularly on her latest record Lemonade, she focuses on problems faced by black women specifically, including the battle with police brutality and culture appropriation.
- She creates a nice balance between being independent but also needing a man.Beyoncé is an independent woman- she made that clear on her record “Independent Woman Pt. 1”. Bey wants everyone to know she’s climbed her way to the top and pays her own bills, however, that doesn’t replace the basic instinct for love and support from a partner. Beyoncé and JAY Z are the power duo of the decade, both tremendously successful in their own right, who we love to read and hear about. Sadly but also respectfully, Beyoncé keeps her relationship quite hidden away from the cameras, but its fair to say one wouldn’t be the same without the other.
- She is constantly praising and giving support to other women. It’s one thing to write a song about powerful women, but it’s another to continuously give credit and love to them. Even though Beyoncé is a true queen in the pop industry, it’s lovely to see her support and respect other women in the industry, such as Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga. Bey has provided us with her fair share of independent women anthems, including feeling myself and telephone, perhaps unintentionally empowering women as well as being catchy as hell.
- She has an all female band.As Queen Bey matured past her dance pop records and into the fully fledged feminist that she is today, some changes had to be made, including some to her band. Beyoncé stated in an interview with Pierce Morgan that it was hard to let go of such talented male musicians but felt it was important to showcase more female excellence in her performances and on her tour. Flawless.
- She influences other women to embrace their womanhood.Perhaps the most important reason on this list is the impact Beyoncé has on other women, all over the world. I myself have been greatly influenced by the talent and success of Beyoncé and how much she embraces sexuality and femininity. I no longer feel ashamed by my desire to feel beautiful, pleasing my partner, or being a strong female boss, no matter how many times us women can be degraded for it.
From her inspiring words to her empowerment of women, Beyoncé is a true, powerful feminist who inspires women worldwide. In a world full of divas and superstars, there is only one Beyoncé.
