What’s Happening In The Democratic Republic Of The Congo: What People Need To Know

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing several consequences due to political unrest and climate change. According to FloodList, some denizens of Boma, a town in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, have been killed or have lost their shelters due to fatal floods. These floods took place not only two days after Christmas, but also two days after a mass stabbing in another part of the region. AfricaNews reports, “The massacre occurred in and around Eringeti in the Beni territory which has suffered a lot of attacks since October 2014 resulting [in] the death of more than 700 people.”

While for some climate change is simply an issue saved to be discussed in conference rooms, it is already depriving others of their right to survive. Not only will the Democratic Republic of the Congo be affected but the entire continent of Africa will be facing several disasters. BBC News reports, “Severe floods, droughts and storms are expected to increase as a result of climate change in Africa.” The extremity of the predicted climate change is something that needs to be addressed by public officials in governments all over the world in order to collaborate with scientists and prioritize climate change above certain other political and economic issues.

It also seems like many are unaware of the severe political problems that exist in the DR Congo. According to WorldWithoutGenocide, the Rwandan genocide prompted Rwandan inhabitants to escape the nation and reside in the Democratic Republic of the Congo out of fear of persecution and death. Due to several clashes among all those who were in the DR Congo, a war within the country was ignited. The war lasted from 1996-2003. However, DR Congo is still recovering and tackling issues involving violence and interregional discrimination. The recent stabbing indicates that the effects of the war have not completely disappeared as political disagreement is still causing much brutality including the deaths of innocent people.

It is important to acknowledge that Christmas is a significant holiday in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since most of its population does follow the Christian religion. While the prevalence of Santa Claus, snowmen, and reindeer may not exist to as large of an extent as it does in the United States, religious celebrations in churches are definitely a large part of Congolese culture. Regarding DR Congo’s holiday traditions, WhyChristmas writes, Christmas Eve is very important with Churches having big musical evenings (many churches have at least 5 or 6 choirs) and a nativity play.”

During such a crucial time when perhaps expressing gratitude or giving to those in need is emphasized, it can be extremely difficult for Congolese citizens to maintain a positive attitude when they are left without their loved ones and end up needing immediate financial assistance.

It is our job to help our Congolese brothers and sisters during these rough times. Spreading the word on social media is always a good start. A couple of organizations you can also donate to and get involved with include Care and Camme RDC. These organizations are helping the people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo obtain their basic human rights, survive, and also thrive during unfavorable times.
