7 Differences Between College In The US and UK

We’ve all seen how college life is different in the U.K. compared to the U.S., and whether you’re thinking about applying or visiting your British cousin, here are 7 differences how they are majorly different:

  1. Dorm rooms
You usually get the luxury of your own room in the U.K. with an en suite bathroom, desk and closet however you’re probably looking at sharing with a roommate in the U.S. But who knows, you could soon get over the lack of personal space and might end up becoming best friends by the end of the school year. And who wouldn’t wanna be living with their best friend all year around?
  2. Food
U.S. students never starve, especially if they have a meal plan. But this could be very untrue for U.K. students where by the end of the term, you’re most definitely living off beans on toast and saving the last drop of milk for your tea because you’re completely running out of your student loan.
  3. Professors
In the U.S., professors go out of their way to help you, whether you want to re-do assignments, or gain extra credit. Extra credit you say? Free marks?! Completely non existent in the U.K. You virtually never see professors in the U.K. except for during your lecture. They’re usually only concerned with providing you with the groundwork, and expect you to gain your own real world skills. They give their lecture, assign reading and work, and then ignore you.
  4. Participation in lectures/class
American students always turn up and while they’re present, are very enthusiastic to share their knowledge and answer questions, which is basically the opposite to how it is in lectures and seminars at British university.
  5. Campus
Walking around campus in the U.K. will probably make you feel like you’re prancing around a 1000 year old castle owned by a bishop or the Buckingham Palace. The buildings are extremely regal and make U.S. colleges seem boring and uninteresting.
  6. School spirit
Gong to American college means seeing everyone constantly supporting their sports teams by wearing college teams’ apparel to show their devotion. There’s always some type of celebration happening to honor the new win. Unfortunately, this is not the case in the U.K. where you’re lucky to see more than 5 people carrying a gym bag let alone anyone wearing sports attire while carrying a hockey stick.
  7. Party life
U.K. students party it up in clubs, but because most college students are below the drinking age in the U.S., college students rave at their dorms, house parties, frats, and more.

Although it may seem like American College is way more fun, British university could have its perks too. Who knows, maybe you’ll end up having the time of your life!
