We have seen many times in the last few years, celebrities talking about politics and taking a stand for social justice. Take the case of Meryl Streep at the Golden Globes this year, where she confronted president elected Donald Trump for mocking a disable reporter who had no chance to fight back.
Last Saturday, Mauricio Macri took part in an interview with one of the most famous Argentinian entertainer, Mirtha Legrand. She had shown support to his campaign previously so he might have not been ready for what happened. Mirtha told the president what many Argentinian people wanted to for a long time: He didn’t accomplish any of his promises. Taxes went up along with poverty and unemployment.
One of the most important things that the Argentinian president declared was that the minimum retirement money the state provides was one third less than it really is. People could not figured out how the person in charge of running the country didn’t know this information.
“You don´t see the reality. I do not want to use the word collapse, but I think that the disbelief began when there was that increase in the rates of light and gas, it should have been gradual” The president was astonished and speechless.
This interview was made in a difficult time. Teachers didn’t want to start teaching because the payment the were getting was not enough for surviving and living in a decent way. This led to several manifestations and controversial statements were given but no solution was achieved.
“If you don´t know where are you standing, how are you going to fix the problems we have?”
Macri couldn’t give an answer that convinced the people who are suffering his politics. “I know what is happening to our country and I suffer it”. It sure doesn’t look like you are in pain, Dear Mr President. All I and most people could see in this interview was a million excuses at why the country is not improving. Empty promises do not get us to the end of the month.
