[dropcap]T[/dropcap]his week, Nicki Minaj released a song with Gucci Mane called “Make Love.” In her verse, she threw shots at an unknown female rapper, with lines like “You see, silly rabbit, to be the queen of rap / You gotta sell records, you gotta get plaques.” Many have speculated that these lines are aimed at Remy Ma, who has so far only scored one platinum record, “All The Way Up” with Fat Joe.

This morning, Remy Ma released a 7 minute diss track titled “Shether” to Soundcloud. In case anyone had any doubts as to if Remy heard Nicki’s verse, this sure cleared it up. She starts the track with audio of Nicki Minaj saying “Free Remy!” She references many of Nicki’s lines in previous songs, and she attacks many people in Nicki’s life.
This is not the first time someone has come after Nicki. You might recall Lil Kim’s “Black Friday” diss, which has cover art with a striking resemblance to “Shether” (both featuring a slaughtered Nicki).
Remy has been asked in interviews if there was any beef between the two rappers and has denied it numerous times.
In an industry run by men who do not give women enough credit for what they do, I’m not sure how to feel about this beef. Nicki Minaj has worked so hard to keep the love between females in the industry alive, but what does this mean for her efforts? On the other hand, this is a chance for Nicki to show what she is made of and that she can hold her own in a situation like this. It’s not about pitting women against each other. Nicki Minaj has been the dominating female rap artist for many years. She has won the BET Award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist for 7 years straight.
It’s clear Nicki made her lane and doesn’t plan on anyone taking her spot as the best female rapper. Remy Ma has shown her talent as a lyricist with songs such as “Conceited” and “All The Way Up” with Fat Joe, including her previous songs with Terror Squad such as “Lean Back”. The general issue is people are hyping this up and pitting women against each other. How come in hip-hop there can only be one dominating female rapper at a time? I believe there’s room for at least two top females acts at a time.
Although this is old-fashioned rap beef, it poses a bigger issue of a woman’s place in male-dominated hip-hop, it’s implying that there can only be one, and they have to both fight each other for the spot. Male rappers usually don’t have to fight for a spot because there are multiple for them. For women, it’s either the top or nothing else.
For now, Nicki can stay unbothered as the highest selling female rapper of all time, but we will leave you with what she had to say about all this:
In a previously published version of this article, we put the title as “Remy Ma Tries To Diss Nicki Minaj” we apologize for the bias and have updated the article to focus on the bias of women in hip-hop.
