I didn’t know being a millennial was a bad thing until about a year ago. When election talk was hot and conservative Trump supporters made it evident that millennials are the complete worst all over social media. (Facebook especially). I was confused. How could being born between 1982 and 2004 make you a bad person? The answer is simple. Having views different than generations previous. Baby Boomers are the generation that made the judgement call about us. From the election to present day; there are memes, posts, and much talk on how millennials are ruining the country with liberal views.
While citizens talk down on millennials, politicians want to know how to get our votes. Bernie Sanders was ready to get us free college. Hillary Clinton made vines and tweets trying to appeal to the younger people. Any generation that was offered free education would not want to turn that down. How can a generation be better than another? Things change throughout time. I would argue that people change the most each year.
So I decided to see if anyone else felt the way I did. I was searching throughout social media and found a whole group of over sixteen-thousand members who share solely pictures, videos, and statuses of other people putting millennials down. Is this what we have all come to? Saying that a whole generation is horrible and out-of-touch with the world because we didn’t grow up the way baby boomers did? Or because they didn’t have the technology 40 or 50 years ago? I would hope not, but this group opened up a whole new world of media and people constantly bashing on millennials.
A little while after I had joined this group, I had made plans to visit my grandparents. Keep in mind they are both mildly conservative, republican, and hard-core Trump supporters. I had made a joke about being a “stupid millennial” because I thought they would find it funny. I had then received a different response.
Overall, I’ve learned that Millennials are no different then any other generation. Just because we grew up in a different time, does not mean that we are better or worse. If the older generations would stop looking at millennials in a bad sense, we could move past political and basic issues in our society.
