Solange Knowles
Ever feel helpless as a black person in a white man’s world ? Here are some outlets that will allow you to regain your sanity.
A Seat at The Table -Solange Knowles
As people of color, we often sacrifice our comfort in order to assimilate into molds accepted by the white community. Whether it is through chemically altering our hair, bleaching our skin, or lowering our voices in order to avoid the dreaded “angry minority” stereotype . In this album , Solange is letting us know that our pain is valid , but we should not let it make us cower to white domination. If you ever feel “weary of the ways of the (white) world” the tracks Cranes in the Sky,Weary, and Rise will serve as therapy for your soul. If you ever feel insignificant blast F.U.B.U, Junie, Don’t you Wait , or Mad to affirm that we are the shit. This album has gotten me through my post-election frustration. Blast Solange’s soothing vocals to drown out the alt right voices on that try to teach you to hate yourself.
The Read- Kid Fury and Crissle
The Read is a pop culture podcast, told through the lens of two friends trying to make sense of all the bullshit in this world . I turn to this podcast whenever I feel utterly powerless. Their rants regarding white feminism, the election, homophobia, and white shenanigans affirms my anger and refuses to allow me to become numb to the injustices we face as black people . The comedic relief provided by their assumption of the personas of Blue Ivy and North West, the disturbing listener letters, and their creative reads , allows listeners to bond over these iconic moments. Check them out on SoundCloud,ITunes, and Stitcher to get your life .
Another Round – Heben Nigatu and Tracy Clayton
Another Round is a pop culture podcast which addresses political, social justice, and minority issues in the media. Hosts Heben Nigatu and Tracy Clayton analyze headline news events through their perspective of two black women navigating in white spaces. Their unapologetically black attitudes and hilarious side comments about white supremacy never fail to lift me out of any funk. Their segments regarding self-care have forced me to confront my anxiety and come up with solutions to maintain my sanity amidst America’s blatant disregard for black lives.Check them out on ITunes and Soundcloud to be inspired .
Lemonade- Beyoncé Knowles
This album has gotten me through so much turmoil. Whenever I feel disrespected by life I just blast Sorry and Don’t Hurt Yourself to feel like a bad bitch again. I love how the sisterhood between black women was accentuated by this album. Whenever I get denounced for seeming like an “angry black woman” I just listen to Formation to remind myself “you know you’re that bitch when you cause all this conversation”. Play this album on repeat to remind yourself about how sickening you are.
