On December 11, singer and songwriter Halsey performed at the Nobel Prize Concert in Oslo, Norway. Past performers of this infamous event have been Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Elton John, Paul McCartney, and more. With the Nobel Peace Prize Concert being one of the most grand and respectable events of the year, this performance was a huge accomplishment for Halsey.
At the event, Halsey first performed Castle in a beautiful long black dress and a black leather jacket with the numbers 20:1 painted on to the back. She then performed hit single Colors, but before doing so, gave a short speech to the audience. In this speech, Halsey stated that “The number on this jacket represents the ratio of male to female recipients of the Nobel Prize. An award that recognizes great achievements and social creatives and scientific fields. An award that this year finds itself belonging to not a single woman. I’m honored to stand on this stage as a voice and I know that the Nobel institution compassionately shares my hope that more women will walk the Nobel stage.” She then stated her plans to donate to an organization of her choice that helps give education to women all over the world.
It is so refreshing and inspirational to see famous musicians use their limelight for a greater good, as Halsey just demonstrated. We must all use her words to not only stir up much needed conversations on female representation, but also realize that we must always use our own privelege to shed light on the disadvantages of others.
