The role middle school educators play in your life is often very underrated for they can shape your perceptions as you grow older. The Popular Disney cartoon Recess (1997-2001) featured on of the most progressive and “woke” characters in the form of the Indian American teacher Miss Grotke.
She was studious and kind-hearted in her approach to teaching but she was also, most importantly not afraid to call out society or point out flaws in our white-washed sugar coated history.
She displayed her feminism by calling out the forefathers for creating a gender based society and excluding women.
She cited Amelia Earhart for her rugged feminism.
She proved that you can choose to groom yourself in whatever way you please and not in ways society brainwashes you to and revealed her hair legs.
Miss Grotke didn’t stop there, she went further and revealed the actual truth about thanksgiving that is politely ignored and well as advising to be mindful about the way history is portrayed in textbooks.
If you’re planning on becoming a teacher someday or already are one, I suggest you take a lesson out of Miss Grotke’s book.
