Chance The Rapper is an inspiration to musicians and people everywhere. The 23 year old from Chicago has consistently created music with positive vibes and has been an advocate for various social justice causes. Here are three ways in which the young artist has positively influenced the world.
1.He’s won three Grammy’s despite the fact that he has never sold music. All of his music is available on free platforms such as SoundCloud. Labels and corporations would simply restrict the quality of music and force him to make music to sell, not to inspire. His journey into the music industry without the representation or assistance of a record label is truly motivational for upcoming artist who don’t want to be constrained by the norms of record labels and that a contract is not the only form of producing a steady income. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Chance said he managed to make money by selling merchandise and performing at concerts. As said on his song “Blessings,”
“I don’t make songs for free, I make ‘em for freedom.”
2. He’s constantly advocated against gun violence in Chicago and increased support for Movements like Save Chicago. which produced forty-two hours without a single shooting. Despite being out of town Chance’s father, Ken Bennett who worked for Obama when he was a Senator, asked Chance to call businesses and organizations to influence them to commit to the movement. This movement was again attempted in 2015 and Chance has constantly shown support in various formats such as calling radio stations and churches.
3. Chance has also influenced his community by co-creating the Warmest Winter campaign aimed at giving coats specially designed to be used as a sleeping bag, water resistant, and self heating for the homeless in Chicago. The goal was to raise about $100,000 for 1,000 jackets and they ended up raising just a little over that at $117,571. He also has his own nonprofit organization, Social Works, which focuses on positively influencing the youth of Chicago. Events such as OpenMike, which is partnered with the Chicago Public Library, allows for students to freely express and discover themselves through music.
Overall Chance the Rapper has shown to be a wonderful human being in a wide range of ways, from creating songs full of hope and optimism to raising money to save his city.
