Jughead Jones. A writer and teller of stories and odd going ons within the small, eerie town of Riverdale. Early Archie comics portrayed him as a loveable goofball, Archie’s best bud whose asexuality prevailed.
There have been articles written regarding that asexuality of Jughead, but as Riverdale fans have seen over the last few episodes of the CW’s Twin Peaks-esque, bubbly murder mystery, Cole Sprouse’s character Jughead is anything but.
Parading around town uncovering nasty secrets and hardly futile information on the murder of Jason Blossom, Jughead and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) have been spending loads of time together. They work well as a team of investigative journalists, though it seemingly does not end there.
Within an interview, Cole shares his ideas on the whole asexual topic: “I’m just the actor. At the end of the day, to say that’s my job or my duty is probably a misunderstanding of the writers’ role and the directors’ role and the producers’ role. If I was in full creative charge of this character, things obviously would be different, things obviously would go a certain way. But it seems to me that they’re not going to explore that angle and, to me, that’s unfortunate, to be quite honest.”
Cole really does want to keep that asexuality prevalent within Jughead. We have to also be reminded that Cole is not writing the script — he is simply playing out the role given to him. With that, I think it is important to notice that Cole is attempting to keep that asexuality, but his striving to keep it alive has been overpowered, leaving him no other choice but to go with the flow.
Maybe it is not as simple as it seems; Jughead may be learning about his asexuality by trying different things and experiencing other sexualities. Perhaps Jughead is still seeking out what is best for him and who he really is as a person, as he continually strays from high school norms.
Fans are able to see that difference in Jughead. He is not the typical, every-day teenage guy, obviously. Though, he is well-liked by several of the show’s individuals, as any other character would be. As of the latest episode of Riverdale, doubts of his asexuality have been proven correct, as Jughead has decided to pursue a relationship. Yes, Cole Sprouse, also known as Jughead Jones, had a moment (and that is in addition to his shirtless scene!).
As of now, Riverdale’s Jughead Jones remains a mystery; he has overcome stereotypes about “people like him” after being dubbed as an outcast, loner, different, and all the while, he continually pursues what he does best: telling the story of the murder of Jason Blossom. Whether his sexuality parallels that of the original comics, there are far more significant things happening around and in Jughead’s life that need to be sought out, noticed and appreciated.
Jughead’s talents and investigative skills trump his love life. He is a force to be reckoned with — his will and power to share the truth with the world remains. He has done so much for the CW’s Riverdale thus far, and I have no doubts that he will continue to do so, regardless of his sexuality.
