Cultural appropriation is inevitable and believe it or not, it has been prevalent all around the world. With a few variances to the definition, it can be agreed upon that it is mainly “the adoption or use of elements of one culture by another’s.” With such modern technology, social media has been a platform of tremendous influence of people’s perspectives and opinions onto others. If one were to search the two words “cultural appropriation,” it’d be apparent that the topic has created an uproar.
One incident involved a girl who was charged with assault on January 27, at a Hampshire’s Robert Crown Center game in Massachusetts. It is said that twenty year old Carmen Figueroa attacked two basketball players, one for having braids and the other who attempted to intervene. She had claimed that it was “cultural appropriation” and requested for the non-Hispanic girl to remove it. After denying, Figueroa proceeded to pull the girl’s hair. After falling to the floor, she continued to assault her and the girl who tried to put a stop to it. Figueroa pleaded not guilty to the charges of assault and battery and disorderly conduct.
