When people think of millennials, they think of teenagers or young adults. They picture young people who are always on their phones, and live their lives on Instagram or Twitter. There’s an ongoing cycle where older generations always seem to think they’re better than younger generations, and now, millennials are the newest victims of this cycle. But, it’s time to stop underestimating millennials and, instead, time to respect them.
Although there’s no set age range for the Millennial generation, the age range is mainly 13-30. Millennials are the generation that grew up in the technology era; they grew up witnessing first hand the rapid change in technology. And, since they’re able to adapt faster to new devices than older generations, they’re dubbed as “lazy” and “dependent of technology”. When, in reality, they’re simply using the resources available to them. Millennials don’t just use their phones to post pictures online, but they use them to become aware of what’s going on in the world. In fact, about 75% of adults still read the news, but through smartphones.
Many people of the older generations like to call millennials lazy or stupid because of the influence that technology has on them, but that is completely wrong. It’s been proven that millennials are, or are about to become, the most educated generation. Many young adults have made their education their biggest priority. Most high school students give in to unhealthy habits, like not sleeping or eating, to finish assignments. Despite this, millennials still find it extremely difficult to find jobs due to the 2008 recession. Even though, a lot of them were too young to understand what a recession is, millennials faced the worst effects of the 2008 economic crash. Still, millennials remain hard working in hopes of a better future. And, there are many great things about millennials. For example, they are the most diverse generation.
Millennials are the generation that is the most accepting of people of all races, sexes, genders, religions and sexual orientations. This has created a feeling of belonging for many people of this generation.
Millennials have witnessed technological growth, problems in the economy, and remain socially aware of problems happening around the world, all while dealing with the constant negative stereotypes surrounding them. We all need to learn to stop treating millennials like a species from another plant, but rather, like human beings who are just trying to make it through life.
