Halima Aden, the 19-year-old Somali-American stepped out on Kanye West’s Yeezy runway wearing her hijab, making her huge NYFW debut. It was iconic.
She already broke barriers when she became the first Miss Minnesota contestant to compete wearing a hijab and a burkini in the swimsuit round. Unfortunately, Halima didn’t make it to the finals. However, she was the first hijabi model to sign with IMG and now, she’s proudly repping Muslim women at one of New York Fashion Week’s biggest shows.
She took to the runway dressed in a fur coat and immediately became the most talked-about new face from Yeezy Season 5.

Halima Aden has shown the world that conforming to norms isn’t necessary, you can express your creative flare and stick to your values at the same time. She wore her Hijab as her crown and by doing just that she started an important conversation. It is ok to break stereotypes, it is ok to be yourself. On a much larger scale, this is a start and this shows progress. Finally, runways are reflecting the real world, showing the beauty in our diversity,
Halima Aden has proven that her commitment to her beliefs and her creativity are not mutually exclusive.
