I’m sure we’ve all experienced our own downward spiral after getting hooked in a particular interesting show on Netflix and limiting ourselves to our bedrooms for a month solid religiously tapping the Next Episode button as we come closer to the infinitely dramatic season finale. Well this past month I have suffered from this exact situation, with MTV’s TV show Teen Wolf starring heartthrobs Tyler Posey and Dylan O’Brien and other fantastic cast members. But Teen Wold is unlike many other TV shows I have been guilty of bine watching. Barr all the wolfing up and supernatural disasters, the show outlines life in an ideal society by highlighting social issues in a subtle and tasteful manner.
Intelligence
Although Lydia is reluctant to reveal her powerful talent of knowledge for most of the first season, soon the character embraces her ability which leads to the ensemble’s success in countless head on battles with various supernatural forces. Hopefully from Lydia’s willingness to show off her brain cells and fashionable way of making being smart both necessary and attractive simultaneously, young girls can be made aware that being smart does not have to tie you down to a nerdy and unpopular rank in the social staining’s and that intelligence should be embraced.
Girl’s v Boys
Throughout the course of the five seasons I have watched so far, there have been several female leads dominating the show alongside their male counterparts. Their abilities are portrayed as no less important than those of Scott, Stiles of any of the other boys in the cast. Furthermore, those of you who are familiar with the show will know that Cho joins the Lacrosse Team which goes unquestioned by the rest of the team and she is treated the same as all other players during her matches, expelling any suggestions about sexism or reverse sexism. In an ideal world this is how any situation similar to this would be treated however as addressed in my last article this is probably not the case in most schools.
Homosexuality
We are exposed to Danny’s sexuality early on in the series and the topic is subject to no real controversy like his friends not accepting him or him going through any difficult times as a consequence. Whilst this is far from realistic for most people hopefully one day the world will reach this stage of blissful acceptance where homosexuality is not seen as abnormal or something to dwell upon. Boy on boy relationships are given equal significance to all the others and the romances are presented in the same way: with no shortage of on screen make outs. As the seasons and characters progress we are introduced to more gay people as they form the extensive cast and guest stars.
In conclusion, Teen Wolf is firm step in the same direction and can be used to inspire young individuals like myself on how to behave and achieve a perfect society, all acceptance and no prejudice. Maybe one day we can all live in a Teen Wolf World- minus all the werewolves of course-but we’ll keep Dylan O’Brien.
